Taunton (AP) -- A Fall River man has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder for shaking his 8-month-old son and causing injuries that led to the infant's death. The Herald News reports that Christopher Cerce entered his plea Monday in Taunton Superior Court the day before his trial was scheduled to start. The 32-year-old Cerce was arrested shortly after the April 2007 incident. Prosecutors say Cerce originally told police the child's breathing was shallow when he woke up from a nap. But as the interview progressed, Cerce admitted he struck the child in the back of the head, shook the baby three times, and forcefully placed him in his crib. The boy died a little over a month later when he was taken off life support.
